Who Should Take BLS?

BLS is commonly required for healthcare professionals, including nurses, physicians, EMTs, paramedics, dental professionals, medical assistants, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers.

Instructor-Led vs. HeartCode® BLS

Instructor-led BLS is completed in a traditional classroom with an AHA instructor and includes course content, skills practice, and testing. HeartCode® BLS combines online coursework with a separate hands-on skills session.

AHA BLS Provider Certification

Successful completion results in an official American Heart Association BLS Provider eCard, valid for two years. Whether you choose instructor-led BLS or BLS Complete, you receive an AHA BLS Provider credential after successful completion.

BLS Complete combines the HeartCode® BLS online course with a self-guided hands-on skills session at a Heart CPR Verification Station™. It provides a flexible alternative to attending a scheduled instructor-led classroom course.
BLS Skills Only is for participants who have already completed the required HeartCode® BLS online course and only need to complete their hands-on skills session. Most individual BLS skills appointments are completed in under 30 minutes.
Yes. If you completed HeartCode® BLS separately, you can register for a BLS Skills Only session with Heart CPR. You will need to provide your HeartCode® BLS course completion certificate before your final BLS certification can be issued.

BLS Complete does not require a separate classroom written exam. Participants complete the required HeartCode® BLS online course and then successfully complete their hands-on skills session.

Yes. Heart CPR’s Instructor-Led BLS course includes a 25-question written exam in addition to hands-on CPR and AED skills testing.

Instructor-Led BLS courses can take up to approximately four hours. For BLS Complete, the HeartCode® online course is completed separately, and most individual hands-on skills appointments at a CPR Verification Station™ are completed in under 30 minutes.

An American Heart Association BLS Provider eCard is valid for two years from the date of successful course completion.

You can renew your BLS certification by completing an Instructor-Led BLS Renewal course or by choosing BLS Renewal Complete with online training and a hands-on skills session.

Yes. You do not have to wait until your current BLS certification expires to complete your renewal. Renewing before expiration can help prevent a lapse in certification.

Yes. After successfully completing all required course components, you will receive an official American Heart Association BLS Provider eCard valid for two years.
