This program prepares you to teach Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED courses to individuals, workplaces, and community groups using official American Red Cross guidelines.

This blended learning course includes:

  • Online Training: Complete the self-paced Red Cross instructor essentials module.

Earn your Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification and begin teaching lifesaving skills with confidence.

To enroll in the Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course, instructor candidates must meet the following certification and training requirements to become a certified First Aid Instructor or CPR Instructor:

  • Be at least 16 years of age on the last day of the instructor course or class.

  • Hold a current basic-level Adult CPR/AED (or higher) certification or an equivalent certificate.

These prerequisites ensure candidates are properly prepared to complete Red Cross Instructor training and earn their official First Aid and CPR Instructor certification.

Certification – Red Cross Instructor Course

Upon successful completion of the Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course, candidates will receive an official American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification valid for 2 years.

This nationally recognized instructor certification allows you to teach Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED classes, helping others earn their own lifesaving CPR and First Aid certifications through approved Red Cross training programs.

Online Course Requirement – Red Cross Instructor Training

Before attending the in-person classroom session, all participants must complete the online Red Cross Instructor Course through the Red Cross Learning Center.

You will receive a separate email directly from the American Red Cross with instructions and a link to access the online portion of the class. Please read this email carefully and complete the online training before your scheduled classroom session.

If you registered for the First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course at the last minute and did not receive your online course information, please reply to your registration confirmation email or contact our office immediately. If needed, our team will assist you at the start of the class to ensure you can access and complete the online portion properly.

Course Materials Requirement – Red Cross Instructor Training

Links to all required Red Cross Instructor Course materials will be emailed to each participant after registration. Instructor candidates may bring these materials to class in digital format (on a laptop, tablet, or iPad) or as a printed hard copy.

Printed versions of the course materials are also available for purchase through the Red Cross Store.

All participants must have access to the required course materials during the class. Those who do not bring the necessary materials—either digitally or in print—will not be permitted to stay for the class, without exception.

Practice Teaching Assignments – Red Cross Instructor Course

Each Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Candidate must complete several practice teaching assignments during the instructor training course. These assignments help develop the skills needed to successfully teach First Aid, CPR, and AED certification classes.

Instructor candidates will receive an email with their assigned practice teaching topics and skills, along with instructions on how to prepare. If you do not receive this email at least 3 days before your scheduled class, please contact our office at 800-916-1213.

Note: The Red Cross does not require that assignments be sent before class; Heart CPR provides them as a courtesy to help instructor candidates prepare in advance. Not receiving or not checking your email is not an acceptable reason to reschedule. If you did not receive your email, your practice teaching assignments will be provided at the start of class.

If you choose to leave the Red Cross Instructor Course for any reason, you will not receive a refund or be eligible to transfer to another class.
